Churches and Chapels
Places of contemplation
As well as the natural beauty spots in the Wildschönau the many churches and chapels inspire the visitor to spend a little time in deliberation and reflection.
Niederau
The records show that a small Gothic Church stood in Niederau in the year 1409. It was extended in 1499 and replaced by a baroque church in 1740.
Father Franz Xaver Mayrhofer (1896-1935) further renovated the church and the present priest Father Alois Mayr built a new west wing in 1970 according to the plans of the famous Architect Clemens Holzmeister.

Oberau
St Margareth's
The baroque church in Oberau is unique in the whole of Tirol and its 52m high steeple is the Valley's landmark. Because of its size the church is often called the 'Wildschönau Cathedral'. The church is dedicated to St Margareth. A church in Oberau was first mentioned in 1394. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1719 and the beautiful baroque church was constructed instead.

St Anthony's Chapel
The chapel is an octagonal building dedicated to the miracle worker St Anthony of Padua and built between 1706 and 1708. Of particular interest are the Alberti Panels (1763) and the alcove housing the statue of Christ at the whipping post framed in rococo.
Auffach
St Nepomuk's
Because of the ever present flood danger, the church was dedicated to St John Nepomuk in Tirolean late gothic style in 1801. Outside the church is a cracked bell dedicated to the women who helped built the church in 1800. The church was renovated by Father Sebastian Klingler between 1974 and 1987.

Thierbach
Thierbach was pastorally served from Alpbach until 1791 when the building of the new church ´St Michael'S began. The picture of St MIchael over the altar was painted by Josef Gold from Salzburg (around 1880). The statues are of the Saints Joachim, Anna, Jacob and John Nepomuk. The rest of the artifacts and appointments are original.
